GST after discount on clothes: will your sale price drop to 5%?

By the Tap & Bill team · Updated · हिंदी में

Is GST on clothes charged before or after the discount?

After, when the discount is given at the time of sale and shown on the bill: GST is charged on what the customer actually pays, and for clothes and footwear that price also decides the rate. One piece at ₹2,500 or less without GST (₹2,625 or less on a tag that includes GST) is 5%; above that, 18%. A ₹3,000 kurta at 15% off sells for ₹2,550 and drops from 18% to 5%: the customer saves ₹450, but you give up only ₹113.80, because the GST falls from ₹457.63 to ₹121.43.

Offer price of one piece₹2,550 (was ₹3,000)
One piece without GST₹2,428.57
GST rate5% (was 18%) one piece is ₹2,500 or less without GST
CGST 2.5% + SGST 2.5%₹60.72 + ₹60.71
GST on this line₹121.43 (was ₹457.63)
Customer pays₹2,550 (saves ₹450)
You keep (without GST)₹2,428.57 (was ₹2,542.37)

The offer really costs you ₹113.80, though the customer saves ₹450: GST went from 18% to 5%.

Same rule and rounding as the Tap & Bill app, one line of a bill. A guide, not tax advice.

Festive offers on clothes, worked out

Tags include GST, one line of a bill each. “You give up” is the money the shop loses without GST, which is the real cost of the offer.

How GST works with a discount on clothes

  • GST is charged after the discount, if the discount is given at the time of sale and written on the bill (CGST Act, Section 15(3)(a)).
  • For clothes and footwear, the price after discount also picks the rate: one piece at ₹2,500 or less without GST is 5%, above is 18% (rates from 22 September 2025).
  • It is per piece, not per bill. Five ₹999 shirts on one bill are still 5%; one ₹3,000 kurta is 18% until a discount brings that piece down.
  • A discount on the whole bill is shared over the items by value (that is how the Tap & Bill app does it). ₹400 off a bill with a ₹3,000 kurta and a ₹1,000 shirt puts ₹300 on the kurta: it sells for ₹2,700 and stays at 18%, the shirt sells for ₹900 at 5%. If the offer is ₹400 off the kurta itself, it sells for ₹2,600 and is 5%. How you word an offer on the bill is a question for your CA.
  • Buy one get one free is two items for one price, not a free gift (CBIC Circular 92/11/2019-GST). How the ₹2,500 limit applies to it is not settled; the checker and the app share the price over the pieces.
  • A discount given later by credit note follows Section 15(3)(b) and does not change the bill you already made. Ask your CA.

Smallest discount that brings a tag to 5%

On a tag that includes GST, the piece is 5% once it sells for ₹2,625 or less (₹2,625 ÷ 1.05 = ₹2,500). Round the % up, not down: at 22.79% off a ₹3,400 tag the piece still sells for a few paise over ₹2,625.

Why a bigger discount can cost you less

Because the rate falls from 18% to 5% at ₹2,625, the money you keep does not fall in a straight line as the discount grows. One ₹3,000 tag:

DiscountCustomer paysGST rateYou keep (without GST)
0%₹3,00018%₹2,542.37
5%₹2,85018% *₹2,415.25
10%₹2,70018% *₹2,288.14
12.5%₹2,6255%₹2,500.00
15%₹2,5505%₹2,428.57
20%₹2,4005%₹2,285.71
25%₹2,2505%₹2,142.86

At 12.5% off you keep more than at 5% or 10% off, and the customer pays less. The same thing happens to a ₹2,800 lehenga: with 10% off you keep ₹27.12 more than at full price. Price festive offers so the piece lands at ₹2,625 or below, or stays well above ₹2,950.

The ₹2,626 to ₹2,950 grey zone

With a tag that includes GST, a sale price from ₹2,626 to ₹2,950 is above ₹2,500 without GST at 5%, but below ₹2,500 at 18%. The Tap & Bill app charges 18% in this band, which also means you keep less than at ₹2,625. Ask your CA, and avoid sale prices in this band. More on the rule: GST on clothes: 5% or 18%?

On every bill, without a calculator

In the Tap & Bill app the cashier types the discount, or changes the rate after bargaining, and each line gets its rate from the price of one piece. The bill shows CGST and SGST per rate, and your CA gets a GST report. Staff can’t go below the lowest price you set for an item without your PIN (Mol-Bhav Guard), so a festive sale does not turn into a loss. Plans from ₹199 a month; 14-day free trial.

A guide, not tax advice. Rule as the Tap & Bill app applies it, rounded to the paisa like the app; rates from Notification No. 9/2025-Central Tax (Rate), in force from 22 September 2025. Law checked on CBIC (Section 15) and Circular 92/11/2019-GST on 17 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Is GST calculated before or after discount?

After, when the discount is given at the time of sale and shown on the bill. Section 15(3)(a) of the CGST Act leaves such a discount out of the value of the supply, so GST is charged on the price the customer actually pays. A discount given later, through a credit note, has its own conditions under Section 15(3)(b); ask your CA about those.

Does a discount change the GST rate on clothes?

Yes. For readymade garments and footwear the rate depends on the price of one piece after discount, without GST: ₹2,500 or less is 5%, above is 18%. A ₹3,000 kurta (MRP, GST included) is 18%; with 15% off it sells for ₹2,550 and is 5%.

I give 20% off a ₹3,200 saree. How much GST do I charge?

The saree sells for ₹2,560. On a tag that includes GST, that is ₹2,438.10 without GST, so it is 5%: GST ₹121.90 (CGST ₹60.95 + SGST ₹60.95), down from ₹488.14 at 18% without the offer.

How is GST charged on “buy one get one free” clothes?

CBIC Circular 92/11/2019-GST says a buy-one-get-one offer is not a free supply: it is two items sold for one price, and its tax depends on whether it is a composite or a mixed supply. How the ₹2,500-a-piece limit applies to it is not settled. Tap & Bill shares the price over the pieces (two ₹3,000 kurtas for ₹3,000 are ₹1,500 each, so 5%); some CAs take a different view, so ask yours before you run the offer.

Is GST charged on the MRP or on the selling price?

On the selling price, the amount the customer pays after any discount on the bill. MRP is only the most you may charge for a packaged item, with all taxes included. If you sell below MRP, GST is worked out from the lower price, and for clothes the lower price can also bring the rate down to 5%.

Can I give the discount after the bill is made?

A discount agreed later is given with a credit note, and Section 15(3)(b) of the CGST Act sets conditions for it to reduce the GST; ask your CA. If today’s bill simply had the wrong rate or discount, the owner can edit it in Tap & Bill within 30 days: the bill keeps its number, GST is worked out again and the old version stays in its history.

Does the same rule apply to footwear?

Yes. Footwear follows the same ₹2,500 limit per pair since 22 September 2025: 5% up to ₹2,500 a pair without GST, 18% above. Belts, bags, perfume and watches have their own rates and don’t change with the discount.

Does Tap & Bill do this on every bill?

Yes. When you type a discount or change a bargained rate, each line gets 5% or 18% from the price of one piece after its share of the discount, for MRP (GST-included) prices too, and the bill shows CGST and SGST per rate. A discount on the whole bill is shared over the items by value. See GST billing.
